Biography of Assistant Secretary, Philip Hamell

Philip Hamell joined the civil service in 1979 and worked in the Department of the Public Service and the Office of the Revenue Commissioners before being assigned to the Department of Finance on promotion in 1986.

In Finance he worked in the Budget and Finance Divisions, and was Chairperson of the Euro Changeover Board of Ireland 1998-2002.  He then became Director of the Finance Directorate in the Department and later in Organisation, Management and Training Division.  

He was appointed Assistant Secretary General in the Department of the Taoiseach in March 2008.

He was educated at University College Dublin and the University of London and has a Master’s degree in Latin and Ancient Greek.
