Taoiseach’s Meeting with Mitchell Reiss

The Taoiseach took the opportunity to again convey the sympathies of the Government and the Irish people for the horrific tragedy arising from Hurricane Katrina.  He outlined the help offered by the Irish Government and assured Ambassador Reiss of the Government’s continued willingness to help those who had suffered to rebuild their lives.

He reviewed recent developments in the Peace Process, with particular emphasis on potential of the recent IRA statement.

He stressed the need for it now to be borne out by actions, including early decommissioning.  He expressed the view that this can provide an opportunity to inject renewed momentum into the process.

He expressed his concern at the loyalist violence at the weekend and reiterated that there can be absolutely no justification for violence.

He thanked the US administration for its continued support and looked forward to working closely together in the coming months to help build a better future for everyone in Northern Ireland, including through economic development as well as political progress.

A range of other issues were also discussed.
