Government to examine basic income proposals.

The Government today announced the establishment of a Group to examine Basic Income proposals, which will operate under the aegis of the Taoiseach's Department. The establishment of this Group meets a commitment which was made in Partnership 2000 (para. 4.35). The Group will be chaired and served by a Secretariat from the Department of the Taoiseach and is scheduled to have its first meeting on 31 July.

The establishment of the Group clearly illustrates the Government's commitment to giving full attention to an examination of the principle of basic income, having particular regard to the CORI proposals outlined in 'Pathways to a Basic Income'. The establishment of this Group will facilitate the implementation of the commitment in 'An Action Programme for the Millennium' for the preparation of a Green Paper on Basic Income within two years.

The Group will be comprised of representatives of all four Pillars of Social Partnership i.e. trade unions, employer and business organisations, farming organisations and community and voluntary organisations, as well as relevant Government Departments including the Departments of Finance; Enterprise, Trade and Employment; and Social, Community and Family Affairs.
