Arrangements for State Funerals of the Volunteers of the War of Independence on Sunday 14th October

State honours will be extended for the funerals of the ten volunteers of the War of Independence who were executed in Mountjoy Prison in 1920/21.

The removal will take place from the prison on Sunday October 14th at 1 pm, following a private prayer service for relatives. Led by an army motorcycle escort of honour, the cortege will make its way to the Pro Cathedral by the following route: Phibsborough Road, Broadstone, Constitution Hill, Dame Street, College Green, Westmoreland Street, where an army marching company will lead the cortege through O'Connell Street to the G.P.O. arriving at 1.20 pm.

At the G.P.O. honours will be rendered by a Cadet Guard of Honour and a lone piper playing a lament. The cortege will then proceed via Cathal Brugha Street to the Pro Cathedral for a Solemn Requiem Mass at 2 pm.

Following the Mass at approximately 3.30 pm the cortege will proceed to Glasnevin Cemetery. The route of the cortege will be via North Frederick Street, Dorset Street, Whitworth Road, Prospect Road and Finglas Road, arriving at Glasnevin at approximately 4 pm where there will be a graveside oration by the Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D. En route there will be a short pause at the Garden of Remembrance at approximately 3.45 pm, where a minute's silence will be observed.
