Increase in the National Minimum Wage comes into effect today
Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney said that the increase in the National Minimum Wage which comes into effect today (Tuesday 1st October, 2002) is the second increase to the national minimum wage agreed by the social partners and accepted by the Government as part of the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness.
The Tánaiste said "The National Minimum Wage Act, 2000, which came into effect on 1st April 2000, introduced a National Minimum Wage for the first time in Ireland. Since its introduction many low paid workers have benefited, particularly women, young people and part-time workers".
The Tánaiste confirmed that a publicity campaign involving all the main media is currently being undertaken by her Department to raise awareness of the increase in the National Minimum Wage.
As and from today the National Minimum Wage has been increased from its present rate of €5.97 per hour to €6.35 per hour.
