Response to SF Statement

Statement by the Taoiseach

I welcome and am encouraged by many aspects of Gerry Adams speech this morning. His strong statement of determination to keep the peace process intact and of the recognition of the need to bring closure to all of the key issues is a positive contribution at this difficult time in the process. I share his view that the process we are all embarked upon must involve irreversible change on all sides.

When we met yesterday in Brussels, Tony Blair and I emphasised the commitment of the two Governments to the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. In the course of our ongoing contacts with the parties, including Sinn Fein, we will be working to ensure that all issues are addressed in a way which will promote confidence and trust and allow for the restoration of the devolved institutions as soon as possible.

It is vital that the current difficulties are resolved and I will give whatever time and effort that are required to bring about a successful outcome.
