Publication of 'Ireland and the European Union: Identifying Priorities and Pursuing Goals', 2nd Edition 2003

The Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern T.D., last week published the 2nd edition (2003) of the document, Ireland and the European Union:  Identifying Priorities and Pursuing Goals, which sets out the Governments priorities and goals for Irelands engagement with the European Union.

The publication highlights the Governments overriding priority to prepare for and conduct a successful Presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2004.  Conducting the Presidency in a European Union of twenty-five members the ten accession members will become full members in May 2004 will be both a challenge and an opportunity for Ireland.

The European Union of the future will be larger, more diverse and more complex.  The Union is preparing itself to meet these challenges through the ongoing debate on the future of Europe.

The publication contains a chapter devoted to the European Convention and outlines Irelands active engagement in and constructive input to this process.

In the meantime, the European Union and Ireland move forward together.  Most of this publication is devoted to examining ongoing policy areas at European Union and national levels.  It is clear that the European Unions agenda is Irelands agenda.  At the same time in an ever more complex Union Irelands engagement with Europe must continue to intensify.
