Meeting between the Taoiseach and President Paranov of Bulgaria

The Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, TD, met today with His Excellency, Georgi Paranov, President of Bulgaria during his State Visit to Ireland.  Discussions between the two leaders were cordial and useful and covered a range of bilateral and economic issues.  Of particular focus were EU enlargement and Bulgarian preparations for their accession to the EU.  The Taoiseach and the President also reflected on the 50th anniversary of UN membership for both their countries and their shared commitment to UN peacekeeping.

Following the meeting, the Taoiseach said:

“ I am delighted to welcome President Paranov to Dublin today.  This is the first State Visit to Ireland by the President of Bulgaria and is an indication of the very warm relations and growing engagement between our two countries.

It has come at an important time for Bulgaria and I assured the President of Ireland’s continuing support for Bulgaria’s preparations for EU membership.”
