The Government welcomes the publication of the National Economic and Social Forum's report on Child Literacy and Social Inclusion: Implementation Issues

This report has been produced under the NESF's current mandate from Government, that is, to focus strongly on the Irish experience of policy implementation. The Government welcomes the focus on experience in this area particularly given the potential for lifelong disadvantage arising from poor literacy skills.

The NESF acknowledges that Ireland has, over the past decade, been a remarkably innovative and entrepreneurial environment for policy-making. It notes that like many other countries Ireland faces challenges when translating policy into optimum service delivery. The NESF recognises that the policy in this area is well designed and has met with mixed success in its implementation. This report provides a set of recommendations which are suggested to improve implementation in the future.

The Government noted that this report will complement work underway in Departments, which will inform the ongoing evolution of policy and service delivery in this key area.
