Message from Taoiseach: Glencree Peace Awards Dinner, Thursday, 11 November, 2010

Awardees: Peter Robinson (First Minister) and Martin McGuinness (Deputy First Minister)

'I would like to add my voice to those congratulating Peter and Martin this evening. I am delighted that Glencree has chosen to recognise the unique contribution that they both make to continued efforts to consolidate peace and security in Northern Ireland and across our shared island.
As leaders of the Executive Peter and Martin reflect the spirit of partnership and cooperation which is the defining thread of the Agreement and the bedrock on which our cherished peace is built. To do this honestly and in a manner which benefits all the people of Northern Ireland, and of this island, regardless of their political viewpoint, requires personal bravery and courageous leadership.
The unity shown by Peter and Martin in helping to build a more prosperous Northern Ireland has sent the strongest possible message that we all have, and will continue to, overcome the painful divisions of the past. In congratulating them this evening, I would also like to wish them the best as they continue to tackle the new and emerging challenges of the future.
Thanks are due to Glencree for hosting this evening's awards. Over the years, Glencree has been a catalytic force in the peace process. In recognising Peter and Martin's achievements, I think it is also appropriate to honour the work of Glencree."
