Taoiseach's Press Releases 2006
Sinn Féin has today taken an important step on the road to support for policing in Northern Ireland.
I warmly welcome the announcement by Sinn Féin this everning that it will hold an Ard Comhairle on poilicing tomorrow.
A lot of good work has been done, and there is a lot more underway to make our roads safer. Government is playing its part. New legislation on issues such as mandatory alcohol testing and penalty points, extra enforcement resources, establishment of the Road Safety Authority and high profile advertising are just some of the important measures taken in 2006. If everyone plays their part, we can as a nation make road safety a real success story in 2007.
The Taoiseach welcomed the publication today of Part 1 of the Report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into Payments to Politicians and Related Matters. He expressed his appreciation of the work of the Hon. Mr Justice Michael Moriarity, the Sole Member of the Tribunal, and the Tribunal team for their work in bringing forward this comprehensive report.
The Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D., accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., will attend the European Council in Brussels on 14-15 December 2006.
It is a pleasure to be with you all to launch this year’s A Season of Sundays – a gift worthy of inclusion in every GAA fan’s Chirstmas stocking!
It gives me great pleasure to be here today. I look forward to this event every year and was sorry to miss meeting with you last year. I was unfortunately unavailable due to travel commitments but I know that my colleague Minister Micheál Martin did an excellent job in addressing you. This year, normal service has been resumed!
As a Gateway town, Dundalk occupies a strategic location midway between the two major cities of Dublin and Belfast. I am delighted to be back here today to officially open this spectacular new Ice Dome.
I have heard it said that whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision. Sean Gallagher and Derek Roddy are two such courageous men. They saw a gap in the market, developed a unique product and have worked hard to make it a success.
Today marks the end of a distinguished ministerial career for Sile De Valera as well as a new beginning in life. I want to thank her today for her contribution to Irish politics and to Fianna Fáil. We entered the Dáil together in 1977 and over thirty years Sile De Valera has contributed with distinction and integrity to the political process. A person of forthright views and immense personal consideration for all whom she worked with politically and led as a Minister, she has left a legacy that has enhanced politics and reflected credit on a distinguished family tradition.
