28  November  1997 -  Announcing 200 new Cork jobs in Warner Lambert

An Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, T.D., today announced that Warner-Lambert will open a new tabletting facility in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork, involving an investment of £77.7 million. With the support of IDA Ireland, the new technology project will create over 200 jobs within five years. This is in addition to a £39 million IDA backed investment, with 100 new jobs, announced by Warner-Lambert in September this year by An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

19  November  1997 -  Special European Council - Employment creation in Europe

Ireland welcomes the Special European Council which has been convened to discuss Employment creation in Europe. The 1996 Irish Presidency of the European Union placed the highest priority on Employment and the 1996 December Dublin European Council adopted the Dublin Declaration on Employment - The Jobs Challenge.

08  November  1997 -  Joint Island of Ireland War Memorial at Messines in Belgium

The memorial will not only remember the sacrifices of those from all parts of Ireland and from all political and religious traditions who fought and fell in the war, it will also serve as a powerful symbol of reconciliation in the present day. I hope it will attract the visits of many groups from all parts of Ireland. The memorial with its fitting symbolism will be a further step that builds on the restoration of the fine War Memorial Park in Inchicore in Dublin.

23  October  1997 -  Additional £200m plan for Dublin waste water system

The Taoiseach said that "the Minister for the Environment and Local Government Noel Dempsey has approved a key stage of a new scheme of major extensions to the main drainage system in the North Dublin area. This means that the Local Authorities concerned now have the go-ahead to complete the design documentation for major elements of the scheme which will include the critical North Fringe Interceptor Sewer"

The Taoiseach Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D., met the Northern Ireland Minister for Political Development Mr. Paul Murphy MP at Government Buildings this morning.

14  October  1997 -  Taoiseach meets the Western Development Commission

The Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, T.D., met today with the Western Development Commission. He reaffirmed his personal commitment to the work of the Commission and the important role it has to play in the regeneration of the West of Ireland.

All during his political career, Jim Kemmy believed fervently in the possibility of politics changing the human condition for the better. He was essentially a man of the people and gloried in that role.

The Government is determined to ensure that, following a short ban on Irish beef by the Saudi authorities last year because of the B.S.E. scare, this lucrative market (worth over £30 million in 1995) is maintained and exploited further

22  September  1997 -  Ireland hosts Meeting of Senior Officials from 25 OECD member countries

The social partners have access to the Government through a range of monitoring mechanisms, which deal with strategic issues and specific commitments. In addition, the social partners participate in a variety of working groups on long-term policy issues. This provision for consultation and consensual decision-making, is now an accepted basis for policy formulation throughout the public sector.

20  September  1997 -  Taoiseach meets Dr. Robin Eames

The Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D., took the opportunity on a visit to Kerry to meet with Dr. Robin Eames who was there to consecrate the new Church of Ireland in Killorglin today.
