Taoiseach meets the Western Development Commission
The Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, T.D., met today with the Western Development Commission. He reaffirmed his personal commitment to the work of the Commission and the important role it has to play in the regeneration of the West of Ireland.
The Commission, which is to operate on a legislative basis, was established earlier this year to promote the development of the Western Region - comprising Counties Clare and Donegal and all of Connaught.
The meeting discussed the overall brief of the Commission and the way it will work alongside State agencies and development organisations in the Region in addressing economic and social development issues. The Taoiseach referred to the rationale behind his decision to add the western development function, which was formerly in his own Department, to the rural development portfolio in the Department of Agriculture and Food under the responsibility of Minister of State, Noel Davern, T.D. In addition, the Taoiseach also confirmed that a forum comprising Ministers representing Western constituencies is being established to assist Minister of State Davern in addressing issues arising from the work of the Western Development Commission. The Taoiseach also confirmed that he will be maintaining contact with the Commission and intends to meet with its members from time to time.
