Statement by An Taoiseach Mr Brian Cowen TD

I am very sorry to learn of the death of Mr Rory Brady SC.

I had the honour of serving in Government with Rory during his time as Attorney General

Rory Brady was one of the finest and most able barristers of his time.

He had an incisive and sharp mind and he had a tremendous ability to deal with the most complex of legal issues.

He had a keen understanding of politics and a real commitment to public service.

Rory Brady's family were steeped in republican politics and Rory, in his time, was a proud supporter of Fianna Fáil.

His views and wisdom were deeply valued and of immense benefit to a succession of Fianna Fáil leaders including Albert Reynolds, Bertie Ahern and myself.

As Attorney General, Rory Brady made a strong contribution to the Government in which he served.

He was an innovative and practical Attorney who carried out his duties with a strong sense of diligence and dedication.

His advice was always intelligent, informed and clear. He had a well deserved reputation for being an extremely hard worker.

He was a person of many talents and vast intelligence but he remained always the most modest of gentleman.

Rory had an engaging personality and he was held in great affection and strong esteem by all of his cabinet colleagues.

He will be sadly missed. I extend sincere sympathies to his wife Siobhan and his daughters Meadhbh and Aoife. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dhílis.
