What does this law do?
The purpose of the Social Welfare Consolidation Act is to provide, in a single accessible document, the principles governing the application of the Social Welfare Code, in relation to the Social Insurance Fund, social insurance-based benefits, social assistance schemes and child benefit. It also contains the provisions underpinning the control and application of these schemes, and a number of other matters that come under the aegis of the Minister for Social and Family Affairs.
Prior to this Act, Social Welfare primary legislation was contained in the Social Welfare (Consolidation)Act, 1993, and 26 other enactments.
