No. 31 of 2005 - Railway Safety Act 2005
What does this law do?
The Railway Safety Act 2005 applies to Iarnród Éireann, Luas, heritage railways and any similar railways to be built in the future, including metros.
Under the Act, the Railway Safety Commission, established on 1 January, 2006, has responsibility for the regulation of railway safety in Ireland. A railway accident investigation unit has also been established and has the power to investigate any railway accident. The Act provides for a range of indictable offences for endangering railway safety. The Act is innovative in that it provides a framework for the testing of safety critical railway workers for use of intoxicants.
