What does this Act do?

This Act provides for the establishment of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) to promote safety and quality in the provision of health and personal social services for the benefit of the health and welfare of the public. The Health Act also provides for the establishment of the Office of the Chief Inspector of Social Services within Health Information and Quality Authority, with specific statutory functions. In addition, the Act provides for a new system of inspection and registration for residential centres for children, older people (including private nursing homes) and people with disabilities. The Act also amends the Health Act 2004 to provide for the protected disclosure of information in the health service.
