Statement by the Taoiseach
The publication of the draft Statement of Waste Policy is a welcome step in the process of deciding on a credible and practical policy for the development of a sustainable waste management sector for the next decade and beyond.
This Government is fully committed to move waste up the waste management hierarchy, through the introduction of an appropriate financial and legislative measures. This Government is also fully committed to fulfilling our obligation to divert biodegradable waste from landfill required under the 1999 EU landfill Directive. We believe the introduction of Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) is one of the key technologies that will help us fulfil that obligation. We are also determined to achieve the best operating standards for all waste management technologies informed by international practice.
By now publishing a draft Statement of Waste Policy and making it available for public consultation, the Government is providing an opportunity for meaningful engagement with the public and key stakeholders on the way forward on a critical issue which concerns everyone.
